NHS Medical Career Guide


In order to become a Consultant Psychiatrist in the UK you will need to undertake 8 years of training. Below is a graph of your training route and highlights between the old and new systems.

Old System New System (Modernising Medical Careers
Pre-registration House Officer Foundation Years (1 to 2 years)
Senior House Officer (min 2 years)  
  Specialty Registrar
Specialist Registrar (4-6 years) | GP Registrar
(1 year)
(6 years training for Hospital Specialty) |
(3 years training for GP)
|GP (Total time training is 4 years)  
Consultant (Total time spent training is 7-9 years) Consultant (Total training is 8 years or 5 years
for GPs)
Training may be extended by pursuing medical research with clinical duties Training may be extended by obtaining an Academic Clinical Fellowship
