Types of Psychiatric Hospitals

The various types of psychiatrist hospital which treat patients with mental illness include:

Crisis Stabilisation: This form of hospitalisation has to been issued by a Judge, often with the involuntary commitment of the patient. It is also known as an emergency room for mental illness sufferers.

Open Units: The aim of this hospitalisation is to make life as normal as possible for the patients. It has less security than the crisis stabilisation situation but patients are still not allowed to hold their own medications and entrances/exits are locked to prevent patients from impulsively leaving.

Medium-term: In this situation, patients are prescribed drugs which may take a few weeks to react. Patients are held in the hospital until the medication takes place, after which, if all results are acceptable, they can be discharged.

Juvenile Wards: Juvenile wards house and treat children and teenagers, normally 18 or younger, who have mental illnesses.

Long term care facilities: Patients are kept in long term care facilities (modern buildings with security) until their medication has taken affect. The aim is to slowly help them integrate back into society once they are stablised.

Halfway houses: Halfway houses are community-based residence which provides living assistance to patients with mental illness. Though they are argued to be one of the most integral part of the mental health systems, funding is not always sufficient to support these programmes.

Used as a form of prison: In some instances political prisoners and people who have not committed a crime may be temporarily incarcerated in a mental institution.
